Force Fetching
There are several methods for force fetching. I prefer the ear pinch method. Place your thumb in the retrievers ear, find the cartilage, and pinch down until the retriever shows a reaction. Ensure you squeeze hard enough to cause the retrievers mouth to open. As soon as he starts to show a reaction (this is painful for the retriever, do not let up the pressure because you feel sorry for him) say fetch it up and place the bumper in his mouth. At the same time you place the bumper in the retrievers mouth release the pressure on the ear and command hold. Allow him to hold the bumper for a few minutes to relax. Reinforce the hold command if he try's to spit the bumper out.
Even though you did a good job on teaching the hold command it is normal for the retriever to spit the bumper out when you first start force fetching. The concept you are teaching is for the retriever to shut off the pressure of the ear pinch by grabbing, and holding the bumper. Once you start force fetching, you must continue ever day until your retriever is reaching for the bumper as soon as you ear pinch.
Once your retriever is reaching for the bumper the next step is to place the bumper near the table, but not on it, and force to the bumper. Continue this until he is moving to the bumper as soon as you ear pinch. This teaches your retriever to move to the ground to pick up what ever you tell him to.
Once he is bending down to retrieve the bumper then place the bumper on the table and force to the table. Once you have completed force to ground (table), the next step is move the retriever to the ground and start over with basic force fetch, then force towards the ground, then force to ground. I will cover force to pile and the walking force fetch in the future.
